Age 76, passed away on May 6, 2024, peacefully at home after several years of failing health. He was born in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Dr. John and Wilma (Wasser) Mathews. He was raised by his grandparents James and Lena Mathews along with his father and stepmother, Shirley. At a young age he moved to Three Rivers, MI, and graduated from TRHS Class of 1965. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Jim served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970, where he served as a B-52 Crew Chief. He returned to make Southwest Michigan his home, attended Glenn Oaks Community College for a time and soon fell in love with Fayma L. (Edwards) Mathews. They were married on October 5, 1974. His passion for guns, hunting and fishing led to a career in firearm sales where he made many friends and associates through the years. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and always supported the 2nd Amendment.  When not working he enjoyed spending time outdoors and found peace in nature. He believed in the Lord and attended Three Rivers Bible Church for several years. Above all James loved his family and his friends. His warm smile and laughter will be missed by all those who loved him and he leaves behind many memories to cherish. James is survived by his loving wife, Fayma; siblings, Mary (Michael) Miholer O’Connor, Julie (Rick) Nemire, Lois (David) Motz, Kent (Becky) Mathews, Doug (Lilly) Mathews, Lori (Greg) Southland; siblings-in-law, Randy (Pat) Edwards, John VerSluis; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
