A memorial service will be held at a later date and time. Jan will be laid to rest at West Cooper Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Age 83, passed away Friday afternoon, December 23, 2022, After a long battle with Breast Cancer. Jan was born in Allegan, Michigan on February 26, 1939, the daughter of Willard and Elsie (Prestage) Ahlrich. Jan is survived by her son, Charles E. Underwood of Mattawan; daughters, Elizabeth Underwood of Parchment, and Melissa Underwood of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Cassandra Hendrickson; Sarah Jones, William Underwood; great-grandchildren; Allison, Gwendolyn, Maddison; sister, Karin Stewart ; and a brother, Albert Ahlrich; niece, Stephanie and nephew, Steven; and many cousins and friends. Jan was preceded in death by her parents Willard K. Ahlrich, and mother, Elsie Ahlrich, an infant child; infant grandchild and brother, Thomas Ahlrich. Jan lived a full and adventurous life and definitely on her own terms. Jan was a free spirit and enjoyed the night life, dancing and meeting new people. She was a great conversationalist and story teller, as well as, a great historian. Jan was an avid reader, Jan attended Michigan State University where she studied journalism. Her claim to fame she shared with others was her story of her frequent reciting by memory, of the Gettysburg address at the young age of 4. Jan married during her college years and then divorced, raising her 3 children in Cooper Michigan, she cherished her cabin in the woods, commonly referred to as , “the house on the hill”. Jan loved life, and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed her beach condo where she spent her winter months during her later years in the Florida sunshine, spending hours walking the beaches picking up seashells while enjoying the crashing waves of the Atlantic ocean. Jan spent her last couple months being cared for at her daughter Melissa’s home along with the help of Hospice care.
