Age 81, passed away at home on January 17, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Kalamazoo on July 3, 1941, the daughter of the late Garrett and Arline (Howe) VanHaaften. Jean had a keen intellect, a passion for learning and lived her life to the fullest. She loved the idea of helping others which led to a career as a child psychologist. She received her PhD from HAV (in England) which opened a world of opportunities to her. She traveled extensively, living in Germany where she taught English to children and where she would meet the love of her life, Alfredo DiMarino. They were married in New York, then moved permanently to Italy. They lived in Italy for several decades until Alfredo passed in 2007.

When not working, she enjoyed listening to classical music, spending time with family and friends or a good book in the comfort of her home. She loved animals, especially cats and was always finding ways to help and care for them.

Jean’s quiet, gentle and selfless spirit will be missed by all who loved her. She is survived by her only brother, John VanHaaften; one niece and two nephews, Garret (Lisa) VanHaaften, Diane (Kenneth) Hill and Matthew VanHaaften. Garret and Lisa have two daughters, as does Diane and Kenneth. There is also one recently born great-grandniece.
