Summarizing a full life is never easy, but here’s our best attempt. John Arthur Smiertka, of Kalamazoo, was a family man to the core of his being. His 73 years on earth were marked with love, laughter, hard work, volunteering, gardening and lots of books. He was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Irene Smiertka.  John is survived by Jan, his wife of 44 years who was his constant companion, travel buddy and faithful care taker until the end. He is also survived by his children Jim and Julie (Courtney), who were the ultimate joys of his life. Many of Johns best qualities will be carried on through them, including his love for any and all kinds of food. John was the youngest sibling of Carol and Patricia (Doug). Their bond began as childhood playmates and continued with such care throughout the rest of his life. Last but not least his grand-dogs Buddy, Ruby and Maeble. John gave the best scratches and prided himself on teaching them to stay out of the “kitchen.” John was always incredibly generous with his time, whether it be volunteering or spending time with the ones he loved most. He was a faithful AYSO volunteer, coach and ref. A truly creative soul who loved painting, sports cars, Civil War history and above all, a well manicured lawn. He will be remembered for his teddy bear heart, love for the Lions and endearingly grumpy disposition. Rest In Peace John Boy.  Our time on earth together has come to an end, but your memory will live on in our hearts forever.
