Jon Stamats, age 81, joined his Lord Jesus in his heavenly home on September 6, 2022. Jon had been a welder after earning an Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology and an Associate of Arts degree at Ferris State University and later, a teacher after attending CMU and EMU, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education. He was a lifelong fighter, struggling against the effects of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT), a degenerative neuromuscular disease. Jon fondly recalled warm lazy summer days boating on Lake Huron, umpiring his son’s Little League games, golfing, bowling, renovating his 1913 home, and riding his lawn mower. He loved old cars and wooden boats. He was an avid sports fan, following the Tigers and any number of football teams, golfers, and bowlers on television. Jon was a devoted family man. Old friends and his family, including his wife, Dee, son, Kevin, and daughter-in-law, Megan, who all survive, knew Jon as a considerate, always kind, gentle man who never failed to put family first. His clever sense of humor will be deeply missed. He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Alice Stamats, and brother, Bill. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Lutheran Church of the Savior, 3616 East G Ave., Kalamazoo, MI 49004, with Pastor Bart Beebe officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will take place at the church one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 AM.
