Age 70, passed away at Borgess Pipp Hospital in Plainwell, MI on January 26, 2024 with family at his side. Ladd was a kind and gentle soul, and he will be missed by all who knew him. He was born in Ravana, AL on July 19, 1953, the son of the late Donnie T. and Lula M. (Rostick) Dawkins. Growing up on the family farm, Ladd learned the value of hard work, a love for animals and the land. Recognizing that opportunities were limited, Ladd made his way to Michigan. A gifted athlete and musician, he became a walk on fullback for Western Michigan University and played the drums. While attending college he met his future wife, Judy Powell. They were united in marriage on July 19, 2010, and lived their life caring for one another. Ladd was a hard worker and did his best to provide for his loved ones. He was a patriot and served our country in the National Guard. When not working he loved spending time outdoors, feeding animals, fishing and spending time at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. Above all Ladd loved his family and was especially proud of his sons, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A giant of a man, Ladd had the personality to match! His smile and laughter will be missed. He is survived by his son, Josh (Tara Hitchcock) Ampey; grandchildren, Jordan and Olivia Ampey; great-granddaughter, Delilah Ampey; siblings, Donnie (Pauline) Dawkins, Hannah and Lydia Dawkins; special nephews, Richard, Joey and Aaron Ladd Dawkins, two nieces, Ingrid Strunk and Erika Dawkins; extended family and friends. He was preceded in passing by his wife Judy and a son, Christpher Ampey.
