Lucy was a kind and loving woman who is best remembered for her commitment to the church and to those around her. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in education at Western Michigan University. After graduating, Lucy began a long and successful tenure in Portage schools, where she inspired and improved the lives of countless students. Her words of encouragement and passion for learning will live on in the hearts of many. Teaching wasn’t the only way Lucy gave back to the community. She was also a devout member of Zion Lutheran Church, always striving to better the lives of those around her. She served on the altar guild, volunteered with the Braille Ministries, and stepped up whenever she could lend a helping hand. In her free time, Lucy was an avid swimmer and dedicated host. She enjoyed spending summer days at the beaches of Lake Michigan and could often be found in her pool at home. She was always excited to host family and friends. She cared deeply for others and worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone around her was happy and taken care of. Above all else, Lucy loved her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who leaves behind a legacy of charity and joy. On June 15, 1968, she married the love of her life, Ted Maxson, with whom she cherished every moment. She is survived by Ted, their two daughters, Kim (Jeff) Maxson-Stein and Laura Lynch; grandchildren, Abigail Stein, Isabel Stein, River Lynch and Eamon Lynch; nephew, Greg (Cindy) Hasseldahl; nieces, Amy (Peter) Theron, Lynn Hasseldahl, Jennifer Helms, and Michelle Maxson; and extended family and friends.
