Age 96, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019. She was born in Kollinas, Greece on July 22, 1922, the daughter of the late Nickolas and Helen (Koulouri) Demos. On February 13, 1951, Maria immigrated to America and joined one of her brothers in Kalamazoo. On August 27, 1956, she was proud to become a U.S. Citizen. On January 26, 1958, she married Constantine “Gus” Papagiannis who preceded her in death on May 12, 1999. She was also preceded in death by five siblings, Constantine, John, Steve, Paul and Dina. Maria was a faithful member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. She was a hard worker who was employed at Schensul’s Cafeteria and later Jacobson’s Department Store. She retired in 1989 but continued to stay active. She enjoyed reading, gardening, dancing, cooking and baking. Her life was the epitome of a kind heart and positive outlook. She will be missed by all who loved her. Maria is survived by her son, Christopher Papagiannis; numerous nieces and nephews in Greece. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for the loving and compassionate care provided by everyone at Senior Care Partners (PACE) of Kalamazoo and Springdale Assisted Living during Maria’s final months and weeks; “hearts of gold” one and all.
