A memorial service celebrating Marilyn’s life will be held at Unity of Kalamazoo, 1204 Whites Rd., Kalamazoo, MI 49008, on Friday, November 11, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. A time of visitation will take place prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Friends and family will also be able to share memories and conversation at a luncheon provided at the church following the service. Private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Mittenthal’s family requests donations be made to Doctors Without Borders, (doctorswithoutborders.org) to support medical humanitarian assistance internationally, or the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conversancy (gtrlc.org) to support accessible nature trails, or the charity of one’s choice.

With family by her side, Marilyn Mittenthal D.O., age 67, died peacefully on
October 16, 2022. She lived in Kalamazoo for 22 years, working most of that
time as a psychiatrist in private practice. Dr. Mittenthal received her bachelor’s
degree in psychology from Vassar College in upstate New York and then earned
her medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State
University. Following her residency in psychiatry at the University of Michigan,
she served patients for 38 years in Illinois, Kansas, and Michigan and was truly
compassionate and dedicated to their well-being. Dr. Mittenthal read extensively
and exceled at word games and puzzles. She enjoyed the companionship of her
dog Paxton, boat rides on the lake, group exercise classes, nature walks, travel,
adventures with family, and gatherings with friends, old and new. She visited
most states in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She also traveled
to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean in the Americas. Dr. Mittenthal visited
several countries in Europe, most recently Italy and the Czech Republic, as well
as Tanzania, Kenya, Australia, and New Zealand. She is survived by her
spouse, Sandra Hagman; her children, Mara Mittenthal and Lindsey Mittenthal;
her brothers, Robert (Lynn Thompson) Mittenthal of Seattle, WA, John (Kim)
Mittenthal of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Peter Mittenthal of Peacham, VT; and two
nephews, Max and Jack Mittenthal. Marilyn was preceded in death by her
parents, Richard Mittenthal and Joyce Janeway Mittenthal, and her special friend
Linda Topping, M.D.
