Marlys J. Olson of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away at Provision Living in Oshtemo on February 10, 2025, at the age of 90. She was born in Atwater, Minnesota, on September 29, 1934, the daughter of Carl and Marvel (Tait) Nelson. In 1953, she married the love of her life, fellow Minnesotan, David Lee Olson. After his stint in the Army, during the Korean War, they moved to Michigan and made Kalamazoo their home. Marlys was a kind, loving and gentle woman. She began working as a food server at Hillside Junior High where she remained for many years. She always took the time to provide a smile, lend an ear or give gentle encouragement to brighten the day of the children she served. Marlys came from a generation where manners and politeness were important qualities; traits she instilled in her children and those around her. When not working she enjoyed being at home, was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and a loyal member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Above all Marlys loved her family and was especially proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind fond memories to be cherished. She is survived by her children, Brian (Sandra) Olson, Brenda (Peter) Swanson, Bruce (Cathy) Olson and Brad (Joyce) Olson, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; siblings, Robert, Larry and Janice; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded by her parents; husband, David; siblings and in-laws.
