Age 75, of Comstock, passed away at her home Wednesday morning, August 14, 2024, with her loving family at her side. Mary Lou was born in Kalamazoo on August 27, 1948, the daughter of William and Dorothy (Kamps) Gates. She was married to Gary Russell Verburg who preceded her in death in 2012. Mary Lou will forever be remembered for being a “baby hog” and spoiling children. She taught her nieces and nephews to love coffee (Folgers), Pepsi and swimming. Since she retired early, she loved to watch CBS soap operas, visiting Gun Lake Casino and her weekly Keno lunches. She’d spend hours on the phone gossiping and complaining about whatever didn’t please her. While she will be missed terribly, we rejoice that she is no longer suffering. Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Christine Knight Trevino of Comstock; grandchildren, Ericka (Shawn) Camburn, Lorenzo Knight-Trevino; great-grandchildren, Payton Camburn and Lucas Camburn; siblings, Laura Suglia and William (Debbie) Gates; brother-in-law, Wally Woodruff; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Wendy Worden; and countless friends, including her best friends, Darlene Folkersma and Roxann Snow. Besides her husband, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Rick William Knight; sister, Nancy Woodruff; brother-in-law, Phil Suglia.
