Age 81, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at home surrounded by family and friends. Dick was born in Three Rivers, MI, on November 8, 1938, the son of the late Stanley and Mozelle (Wetherbee) Happel. After graduating high school Dick enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served our country with honor until being discharged. He returned and made Southwest Michigan his home. Dick’s kindness and honesty made him a friend to many. He was a hard worker and exceptional mechanic. He retired from the James River Paper Company where he worked as a mill engineer. When not working his passions took him to the outdoors. Dick was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting and gardening. He was a loyal Chicago Cubs Fan; a tradition he passed on to his family. He was a member of Lakeland Reformed Church where his faithful and giving spirit will be missed. Above all, Dick loved his family and friends. He was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather who took the time to make lasting memories with each! There was rarely a grandchild’s special occasion or event that he missed. Dick was also a loving and devoted husband to Wanda (Wolf) Happel whom he married on August 19, 1960. She survives and holds the memory of nearly sixty years of marriage. Though he will be greatly missed, he leaves behind the legacy of a life well lived! Dick is also survived by three children, Donna Smeltzer, Sheryl Happel, Rick (Shannon) Happel; eight grandchildren, Ammand Smeltzer, Jake Smeltzer, Leanne (Kevin Sinkler) Happel, Dylan Happel, Emily Happel, Zachary Happel, Samantha Randall, Ryan Randall; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John (Linda Lammers) Rosine; nieces, nephews and friends. He was also preceded in death by two brothers.
