Tommy Lee Byrd, known as “Boy Byrd” or “Byrd”, passed away at the age of 80, at McLaren Hospital in Lansing, MI, on December 6, 2025. He was born in Toledo, OH, on October 7, 1945, the son of Magnolia Johnson and Cornelius Ervin, of Hickman, KY. He moved with his family to Kalamazoo at a young age. He was raised by his mother and a loving stepfather, S.B. Byrd, of Kalamazoo, who made a great impact on his life. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, Class of 1963. After graduating, Tommy was drafted into the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, he returned to make Southwest Michigan his home. He always remained dedicated to America’s service men and women and was proud to have served our country. Once home he began working at Eaton Corporation and for other manufacturing companies. He was married to Shirley Colbert and began a family; working hard to provide a happy home where all were welcome. When not working Tommy enjoyed working on automobiles, fishing and was a gifted roller-skater. He also enjoyed watching boxing and the history channel on television. He made friends easily and enjoyed playing cards and conversing over current affairs. Above all Tommy loved his family and was especially proud of his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind many wonderful memories to be cherished and will be missed by all who love him.
