Custer National Cemetery, 15501 Dickman Rd., Augusta. Friends wishing to attend should meet the family upon their arrival at the cemetery in the cortege assembly area at 1:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Centrica Care Navigators or the charity of one’s choice, in c/o the funeral home.

Age 86, passed away late Tuesday night, August 29, 2023. Wayne was born in Kalamazoo on June 22, 1937, the son of Gage Ransom and Naomi (Preston) Carpenter. He was married to Linda Gumtow who survives him. Wayne proudly served his nation in the United States Army. He worked for many years in the paper manufacturing industry and had worked for Meijer’s. Wayne was an avid archer. He and Linda were part of the Potawatomi Bowmen’s Club. Wayne also taught archery at Rota-Kiwan Boy Scout Camp. Wayne was a runner and was part of the group that organized the first Kalamazoo Classic, in which he also ran. He also ran once in the Chicago Marathon. Wayne was also a calligrapher and was a member of the Pen Dragons Calligraphy Guild. Besides his wife, Wayne is survived by his children, Alan (Dottie) Carpenter, Frances Carpenter, Shawn (Jennifer) Carpenter and Vickie Bradfield; grandchildren, Sarah Rosenburg, Alan Carpenter, John Carpenter, Stephanie Stout; nine great grandchildren; sister, Jane (The Rev. Larry) Schuyler; sister-in-law, Sue Rogers; nieces and nephews and many, many friends. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Marc Brown; sister Mary Sue.
