A celebration of life gathering will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, beginning at 11:00 a.m. followed by a time of fellowship, at Valley Family Church, 2500 Vincent Ln. Portage, MI, 49024. There will be a firefighters funeral procession and memorial in Irons, MI, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials and condolences may be sent to to the Sauble, Elk, Eden Fire Department Fireman’s Fund c/o Lake Osceola State Bank, PO Box 287 Irons, MI 49644.

Mary Sue Bombich, 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 19, 2023. She was born and raised in Decatur, MI to the late Harry and Gwendolyn (Schuur) Vliek. She spent much of her life in the Kalamazoo area, then settled in Irons, MI. Mary was a dedicated community servant, serving as a teacher, police officer, firefighter, children’s advocate, domestic violence survivor advocate, drug court supervisor, and nursing home social worker. Mary loved traveling with her husband and family. She especially loved making her yearly snowbird trips to Florida and visiting with her family on Cape Cod. Mary is survived by her husband Gregory; children, Leigh Anne McLaughlin, Charles (Margot) Whitney McLaughlin, Michael (Sarah) Bombich, and Matthew (Myriah) Bombich; grandchildren, Elijah, Ezekiel, Nathaniel, Caleb, Julia, Charlie, and Reese; siblings, Laura (Dennis) Bowersox, Nancy (Tom) Auringer, and April Vliek; several nieces and nephews.
